diet coke. Normal doctor Pepper isn't sweetened with aspartame, which is why you'd get a better reaction with diet coke.

It's nice (and scary) to know that anyone can do it with just diet coke mentos (not the colored ones though, less porous). Mythbusters did a show on diet coke and mentos and the science behind it all.
