My Atkins Diet Story

aka how one Iowa guy lost over 200 pounds and gained his life back. I can not say enough about how positively the Atkins Diet and low carb in general has been for me. I went from a 429 pound guy who could barely make it up a flight steps to a guy running half marathons and rejoining the National Guard. My health is fantastic, and my blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart) could not be better.

You tell 'im mate! Ketosis is the best way to lose the weight. I'm on a LCD at the moment, not as hardcore as atkins because, but still within the same principles. Works great =) well done on your loss

My question would be why would you want to leave a diet that would have proven successful to a different one. Remember Inductionb -20g per day- only needs to last 14 days, and then you add carbs back in a regimented manner. That way you understand at what level and which ones you can tolerate and still lose or maintain weight.I am more in favor a dieter picking a single plan and sticking with it to goal and beyond. Otherwise, it seems too much like a fad diet and liable to lead to weightgain.

Well 4 years later after bacon and red meat and veggies and cheese and a few marathons later, my doctor couldn't be more pleased. He is also a huge advocate of low carb and Atkins specifically, and I and my excellent just happened to reenforce his beliefs. Thanks for the congrats, and good luck to you.

Yes it's a low carb diet. But it's also high fat, high protein which is unhealthy according to the American Heart Association. and I'm no dietician by any means, I just know that from what I've heard any health official's opinion is that this diet is unhealthy. Maybe this diet could be healthy. But eating bacon, butter, red meat, etc..definitely isn't healthy. to each man his own, and imo, best way to lose weight = exercise. which is what you did. so i guess congrats.

As for Cancer treatment, my brother attends the Mayo Clinic right now for genetic cancer, and the doctor there recommended a low carb diet to him as well.

Oops repost your last comment if you want Michael, I hit remove instead of reply. As for the other groups, I don't doubt there are long held beliefs in each for mainstream thought. That said both Dr. Atkins and South Beach diet were cardiologist by trade. Atkins Diet challenges the norm and traditional belief systems. Check out the work of Dr. Phinney, Volek, Westman, et. all for healthy nature of low carb eating.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has for the first time voiced its support of low-carbohydrate diets for weight management of people with diabetes. The endorsement was part of the ADAs recently published 2008 Clinical Practice Recommendations, which are intended to guide diabetes health care providers.
